Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan for and move block and bulk flat glass by mechanical means in workplaces which are involved in the manufacture, processing and/or installation of sheet glass. This unit applies to glass processing workers.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare for the task
  • Read work instructions and identify type and quantity of glass to be relocated
  • Identify and follow work health and safety requirements, using all required personal protective equipment
  • Identify blocks of glass sheet to be moved and estimate or calculate weight using appropriate method
  • Identify risks to self, others, material and equipment arising from the required lifting, load carrying, set down or movement of glass
  • Correctly identify mechanical handling equipment based on the size, weight and type of glass
       
Element: Plan glass movement
  • Identify destination for glass and routes to be followed based on work order or storage procedures
  • Compare required clearances to available space and make required adjustments
  • Plan process for relocating glass in accordance with workplace procedures, and include contingency measures for potential difficulties
  • Check proposed process against advisory standards and workplace procedures for compliance
       
Element: Relocate glass
  • Set and test equipment settings and safety controls in accordance with workplace procedures with faulty equipment tagged and alternative arrangements made
  • Check glass for imperfections and damage prior to movement
  • Operate equipment in accordance with approved advisory standards, manufacturer instructions, workplace procedures and safety requirements
  • Follow planned process and route and relocate glass without injury or damage to material and equipment
  • Label glass in accordance with workplace procedures, ensuring there are no projections
  • Check relocation against work requirements, and report any differences to relevant personnel

  • Clean, maintain and store handling equipment in accordance with workplace procedures

Assessment Tasks
